Happy 250th
Independence Day!
I am a bookkeeper offering monthly and specialized bookkeeping services in St. George, Utah, but I am also fascinated with all things history — especially the founding of our country, and the more human history behind the great events and great people of our nation that often gets left out of the textbooks.
When the Founding Fathers signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776, there was no such thing as accountants yet. It wasn’t until the mid-1800s in Scotland that accounting first appeared as a professional, credentialed field. What existed instead was bookkeeping — a skill embedded in the daily work of merchants who kept their double-entry ledgers by hand.
A number of the Declaration’s signers were merchants who kept their own double-entry books based on the teachings and writings of John Mair (c. 1702–1769), a Scottish schoolmaster whose textbook Book-keeping Methodiz’d (first published 1736) became the standard double-entry manual on both sides of the Atlantic — a true contemporary, and arguably the most influential bookkeeping figure in our founders’ world.
John Hancock, with his famously large signature, ran one of Boston’s largest trading houses and practically lived in his account books.
George Washington famously declined a salary as commander-in-chief and instead submitted meticulous expense accounts — so his personal ledgers became a kind of running audit of the war.
Robert Morris of Pennsylvania helped finance the American Revolution on the strength of his ledgers, earning him the nickname “Financier of the Revolution.” He served as Superintendent of Finance and kept the young nation solvent — arranging loans, tracking wartime accounts, and pledging his own credit to pay the army.
Thomas Jefferson kept meticulously detailed account books his entire life.
A Revolutionary War contemporary, Josiah Wedgwood, an English pottery magnate, pioneered what we’d now call cost accounting — analyzing expenses line by line to understand exactly what each piece of pottery cost to make and sell in response to the economic downturn in England. He’s known as an early father of management accounting.
The people building this country understood bookkeeping, and that clean, well-kept, accurate books are the foundation of business. Their businesses built this country.
Just like your business is building this country right now.
If your books need a founding-father-level cleanup — transactions categorized, accounts reconciled, reports you can trust — that’s me, Faith Khat.
I work hard to take the stress off your desk and get you back to doing what you do best: business and profit.
